Aspen is renowned for its excellent skiing across four mountains of uncrowded pistes, it's lively varied nightlife and restaurants and the simple elegance of a town who's tradition is steeped in the old wild west.
Aspen itself was a booming silver mining town in the 1890's and produced a sixth of all the silver mined in the USA. This brought wealth and prosperity and Aspen soon boasted a population of 12,000 with numerous daily newspapers and a varied nightlife which swung from its own Opera House to a red light district. Something for all!
However the good times were not to last for ever and plummeting silver prices took the town with it and Aspen's star faded. By the 1930's many had left and its buildings started to fall to rack and ruin. Skiing started in the 1930's and Aspens first lift was constructed just after the Second World War and since then Aspen has never looked back.
